One of the main expenses of a family (and the hardest to get under control) is food. Every week we go to the supermarket and watch our cash resources drain away on food. We may sometimes wonder why we can’t eat less! There are a few ways to save on the food bills without having to starve ourselves.

Buy Bulk

One way to save on food is to buy in bulk. The supermarket prices for meat especially are often cheaper for the bulk packs of meat. Sometimes you can find a butcher who will supply bulk meat at a reduced price. Certain cuts of meat may appear to be cheaper, but if they have a lot of bone or fat in them, this makes them a poor bargain.

Growers markets often have fresh fruit and vegetables for a good deal less than the shops, but don’t be caught. The watchword is know your prices. Another simple way to buy at discount prices is to go at the end of the week, late in the day. Very often there will be specials to be had in cakes, salads, breads and even cooked chicken.

Share A Wholesale Club Membership

Depending on where you live in the country, there’s probably some form of Wholesale Club near you (Sam’s Club, CostCo, BJ’s). I recommend sharing a membership with a roommate, boyfriend/girlfriend, anyone and taking advantage of the great prices in these places. A wholesale club is where you’ll especially want to implement more than one of these tips (use coupons and buy in bulk for incredible savings).

Create A Menu

One of the absolute best ways to stay in your budget when out purchasing groceries is to plan ahead. You should have a complete game plan about what you will eat each day of the week. Sit down Sunday or Saturday night and think about what you want to eat during the week.
Once you decide what you want, consider doubling the recipes to have enough left-overs for other days. Most days I tend to just plan out my dinners and have that for lunch the following day.

Consider Eating Less Meat

Meat tends to be the most expensive part of a meal, look into some vegetarian-friendly meals to add to your week. Meatless Mondays is a great way to start. Eating less meat also helps the environment, plus they can be just as yummy and filling as meat options.

Buy Generic

It is better to stick with generic or store food brands. Raw foods like pasta, rice, eggs, frozen vegetables, etc. taste very similar to the brands food. Brand foods are costly as they include the cost of advertising, atractive packaging, yada yada but 9 times out of 10 it’s not worth it.

Use Cashback Apps

One of the absolute best apps is Ibotta – The best thing about the app is you get your cashback right away and the savings tend to always be much more than just using coupons.
