Update: I have since created a much more thorough guide to starting a blog here
Have you been thinking about becoming a blogger? Perusing Pinterest and Google, wondering when you should make the leap? No better time than NOW! Blogging brings a lot of cool benefits including:
- The ability to connect and interact with your readers
- The opportunity to build audience
- A chance to make friends and network
- A fun way to make money and make a name for yourself
So, how can you start a blog?
It’s very simple and you can get it done in under a half hour. Here’s what you do:
Pick Your Blogging Topic
Your topic or niche is the fuel behind your blog. Will it be fashion or vegan nutrition or career or military lifestyle? Whatever you choose, pick a niche and then move on to the next step.

Pick Your Blog Name
Name your blog! This is super fun. You’ll want your blog name to go along with your domain name, if possible. Like, chelseasworld with chelseasworld.com for example.
Pick a name you love then do a domain name search on Godaddy
From here, it’s all about getting hosting and domain name purchased.
Buying a domain and getting hosted means you’ll have a professional blog. Instead of a blog name like chelseasworld.wordpress.com, you’ll have chelseasworld.com. It looks better and it’s more professional.
Here’s how you do hosting and domain.
Setting Up Hosting and Domain
The two together you can get with Bluehost. They bundle it up for ya in the same purchase (domain is usually free). It’s super simple.
1.) Go to Bluehost
2.) Then pick a package ( I usually go for the Basic package)
Boom, all done! Next, you connect WordPress. Do the 1-click WordPress installation and you’ll be set.
After Your Hosting and Domain Are Purchased, Now What?
It’s time to design and set up your blog. Picking a design (or theme) is one of the funnest parts. You can browse the WordPress theme store or go to a theme provider, like Studiopress or Bluchic. A paid theme will be between $30 to $80, and can go higher from there.
Some of my favorites from Creative Market
So you pick a theme, add your pages, and then start adding content and plugins.
Pages to Add
Look at adding your basics like About Us and Contact Us. You can also add blog categories, an FAQ, a shop, etc.
Don’t go plugin crazy. Add the basics. Some of my must haves are:
- Yoast SEO
- Contact form 7
